What You’ll Do

Under the direct supervision of the Phlebotomy Team lead, the phlebotomist assumes the responsibility for performing venipuncture and related procedures under the philosophy, policies, and procedures established by the hospital and department. The phlebotomist is the departmental ambassador and is responsible for providing excellent customer service. This position does not have access to funds.

Required Educational Degree: High School Diploma or GED

Preferred Education: Accredited phlebotomy course completion.

Required Certifications, Credentials and Licenses: Certified as a Phlebotomy Technician (PBT/CPT) as outlined in AHS Laboratory SOP Name: Certification Pathway and Certification. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and/or Electrocardiogram (EKG) as needed depending on position. Hospital/laboratory phlebotomists are not required to have CPR/EKG

Required Experience: Excellent customer relation skills. Mathematical, verbal, and written skills at the high school level.

Preferred Experience: Previous experience as a phlebotomist in a hospital setting.

Job Essential Functions:

1. Responsible for collecting and processing a wide range of patient specimens (venous, capillary, saliva, throat, nasopharyngeal, breath, and microbiology) across all age groups. Provides patient instructions for proper specimen collection (urine, drug testing, sputum, semen, stool, glucose tolerance). Ensures specimens are properly labeled, documented, and meet testing requirements. Must complete on-site training for urine drug screen and breath alcohol testing. Maintains compliance with laboratory standards, ensures accurate patient identification, and handles specimen delivery and processing both internally and externally. 2. Responsible for accurately processing laboratory and diagnostic orders by collecting required patient and physician information, entering data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and ensuring correct billing and result reporting. Screens Medicare orders for medical necessity, issues ABNs when required, and maintains thorough documentation per policy.

3. Acts as a customer service representative for the Adena Health System, providing professional assistance to patients, families, physicians, and staff across all age groups. 

4. Supports department operations by handling clerical duties, attending meetings and trainings, participating in quality improvement activities, maintaining competencies and compliance with policies, managing supplies, and ensuring efficient, fiscally responsible workflow. Communicates effectively within and outside the department and performs other duties as assigned.
