Nurse Manager – State Psychiatric Residential Treatment Center (SPRTC)

Position Overview
The Nurse Manager provides clinical and operational leadership within a Colorado Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF). This role ensures safe, trauma‑informed nursing practice; oversees medication and clinical operations; and maintains compliance with CMS PRTF Conditions of Participation, CDHS Volume 7 (12 CCR 2509‑8), BHA, HFEMS, Joint Commission and CDPHE standards. The Nurse Manager supports interdisciplinary treatment, manages nursing staff, and ensures youth receive medically necessary care under physician direction.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Oversight & Safety
* Directs psychiatric and medical care under physician supervision in alignment with federal PRTF requirements. * Oversees nursing assessments, daily clinical rounds, and youth health monitoring. * Ensures compliance with federal restraint/seclusion regulations (§483.350–§483.376). * Leads clinical response to acute psychiatric or medical events.
Medication Management & MARS
* Oversees the Medication Administration Record System (MARS) for accuracy and audit readiness. * Ensures safe storage, controlled substance counts, PRN justification, and medication‑error reporting. * Coordinates with pharmacy for reconciliation, refills, and formulary compliance.
Staffing, Scheduling & Competency
* Maintains 24/7 nursing coverage as required for PRTFs. * Adjusts staffing based on acuity rather than fixed ratios. * Conducts onboarding, annual competencies, and trauma‑informed care training.
Regulatory Compliance & Documentation
* Ensures compliance with CMS PRTF standards, CDHS Volume 7, BHA/HFEMS rules, and serious‑occurrence reporting requirements. * Oversees chart audits, documentation quality, and corrective action plans.
Incident Management & Quality Assurance
* Leads nursing review of restraint/seclusion events, self‑harm attempts, AWOLs, and medication errors. * Participates in quality improvement, data tracking, and regulatory reporting.
Interdisciplinary Coordination
* Collaborates with psychiatry, therapists, milieu staff, and operations to support integrated treatment. * Ensures nursing participation in treatment planning, ITCT processes, and discharge planning. * Coordinates with external providers, RAEs, and case managers when applicable.
Family, Youth & Stakeholder Communication
* Provides clear, trauma‑responsive communication to youth, families, and guardians. * Ensures youth understand their medications, care plans, and safety expectations.
Operational Leadership
* Manages medical supplies, equipment, and infection control. * Ensures readiness for state surveys, accreditation visits, and audits. * Supports policy development and implementation.
