Position: RN - Clinical Specialty Coordinator – Spine 

 

The Clinical Nurse - Clinical Specialty Coordinator coordinates a service line of care (Spine) for a similar patient population of high-acuity patients of all ages within the OR. Responsibilities include comprehensive assessment, clinical judgment of physiological health, monitoring patient status, and developing appropriate care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team. This role serves as a clinical expert to assigned staff, acts as a strong unit leader, and performs unit and system leadership activities as needed to support the specific service line. The coordinator applies advanced clinical knowledge of the specialty, is required to scrub and/or circulate, and oversees the development of core curricula in conjunction with clinical educators and system education. They oversee orientation and ongoing education of staff within the service line, acting as a role model and resource, while keeping IU Health’s Mission and Vision at the forefront of all patient care and system activities.

Position Overview:  

The RN - Clinical Specialty Coordinator plays a key leadership role, combining clinical expertise with educational and system leadership duties to enhance patient care quality and staff development within a designated specialty service line.

Key Responsibilities: 

• Coordinate care for high-acuity patients across all ages within the service line.  

• Conduct extensive assessments and exercise clinical judgment to monitor and plan patient care.  

• Serve as a clinical expert and resource for assigned staff.  

• Lead unit and system activities supporting the service line’s goals.  

• Develop and oversee a core curriculum for staff education and orientation, collaborating with educators and system training teams.  

• Act as a role model, resource, and member of the management team.  

• Ensure all activities align with IU Health’s Mission and Vision, emphasizing patient-centered care and system excellence.

Qualifications & Requirements: 

• Education: 

  - Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ASN) required.  

  - Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.  

• Licensure:  

  - Active RN license in Indiana or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).  

  - Graduate from a nationally accredited nursing program.  

• Certifications:  

  - Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.  

  - Additional advanced life support certifications may be required depending on the unit/specialty.  

• Experience:  

  - Relevant clinical experience preferred.  

  - Neuro & Spine experience strongly preferred 

• Knowledge & Skills:  

  - Strong clinical judgment and advanced knowledge of the specialty.  

  - Ability to develop educational curricula and oversee staff orientation and ongoing education.  

  - Leadership skills and ability to serve as a unit and system resource.
