About this role

Why We Need This Role As pharmacy volume and complexity continue to grow, maintaining both operational consistency and strategic focus requires clearer role alignment. Currently, Department Managers are balancing long-term planning with real-time operational coordination. While effective in earlier stages, this model becomes less scalable as demand and staffing increases. The Lead Pharmacist role is designed to strengthen day-to-day execution while allowing Department Managers to maintain focus on strategic priorities, growth, and performance optimization. It also establishes a defined pathway for high performing staff pharmacists to expand their impact, supporting internal talent development and long-term leadership continuity. Other departments benefit from lead-level roles that provide shift-based coordination and immediate support. The absence of a comparable role creates variability in day-to-day execution and limits real time responsiveness. This role addresses that structural gap and aligns pharmacy operations with the existing organizational structure.   Core Responsibilities Day-to-Day Operations The Lead Pharmacist maintains workflow continuity by anticipating bottlenecks, monitoring task completion, and adjusting priorities in real time to keep operations moving efficiently. Staffing and Coverage Ensures appropriate coverage throughout each shift and provides hands-on support during peak demand. Training and Onboarding Delivers a structured onboarding experience and reinforces consistent verification and workflow standards. Performance Support Identifies trends, provides real-time coaching, and supports the Department Manager with performance insights. Clinical Escalation Serves as the first point of escalation for complex cases, supporting consistent and high-quality clinical decision-making. Continuity of Operations Ensures seamless operations in the absence of the Department Manager while maintaining alignment with departmental goals.   Report Structure and Role Clarity The Lead Pharmacist reports directly to the Pharmacist Department Manager who reports to the PIC. This role functions as the shift-level coordinator for daily pharmacy operations. While the Lead Pharmacist provides real-time direction, workflow coordination, and frontline support, formal performance management and personnel decisions remain the responsibility of the Department Manager. This structure ensures clear accountability while strengthening day-to-day execution
